Everything at Katz’s is in traditional fashion, especially the fun and embarrassing ticket system. As I walked into the store, I immediately got a whiff of smoked meat.

Katz’s Corned Beef  & Pastrami

The meat was hand sliced, and the grease dripped off it as the deli man packs the sandwich with two extra slices more than you need. Pastrami was smoky, juicy, salty, thick, to die for and did I mention smoky? It was really smoky.

Rueben - Corned Beef & Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Russian, and Sauerkraut

This was a real-deal Rueben. The quivering pastrami pile made rye bread seemed so inadequate here. What also in this Rueben were a handful of sour kraut, melting cheese slices, and chunky Russian dressing. This whole mess was a form of prosaicness at the best possible way. And food this good always deserves a transverse cut shoot… I can guarantee that my first visit to Katz’s won’t be my last…
