Since Pete Wells made Sushi Nakazawa a four star restaurant on the Times, it remains just as impossible to get into as ever. I admit, it took me a while to try vying a reservation on Opentable… Ultimately, I was brought here by a smart friend who snagged two bar seats two days in advance when someone had canceled. I was not ashamed..

Scallop was ludicrously fresh. It even gave a twitch after being plated in front of us. Itself contained a mild oceanic salinity.

The glistening ika nigiri got a jelly-like texture.

To a liver girl, this was the surprise favorite piece. I can taste the incredible amount of sweetness from the liver, at the same time, felt that rush of freshness as soon as I bit into the fish.

Another note – the sake pairing is a steal at $40. Five kinds of sakes definitely enhanced the whole meal. The sommelier was knowledgeable and patiently explained how each complemented the progression of the fish.

Not all the pieces were evenly knockout. For example, the piece of pompano was mundane to me. And the shrimp, which was poached sweet and tender, lack a bounce to shock my world. Nonetheless, all the tuna ones were at their best, and I love the mackerel selection to no end.

During the truffle season, we took the opportunity to add Tuscan truffle for $15. Given this extra sparkle, I was confident to say that no better uni could be found anywhere in town at the moment.

The end was upon us. Nakazawa’s famed tamagoyaki (learnt under Jiro) arrived. It was custardy, spongy, less pudding-like, but more cake-like. The simplest of pleasure definitely calls for the greatest of care.

Well, not that I was still hungry, a good turn just deserved another… And, sea urchin hand roll, because overindulgence should be quintessential.

I envy people who have not yet made the journey to this place, for the gorgeous discovery awaits them. Sushi Nakazawa is serious good eating, period.
