Gamification – “If you really want something, keep tapping on it.”
The evil cycle
Tap On is an iOS application for users to win free products by tapping the screen while watching advertisements.
I originally got this concept from the movie Hands on a Hard Body, which documents a yearly competition happened in Texas, where twenty-four contestants match against each other to see who can keep their hand on a pickup truck for the longest amount of time. Whoever endures the longest wins the truck. I was interested by the mechanics behind this activity. I think while this business promotion is absurd, it can be a smart sales strategy. So I wanted to play and move this mechanics onto the digital screen.
Along with other studies I did about branding, brand loyalty, and gamification, I created this straightforward iOS application, which is almost like an idle game. In this application, player’s tap count was turned into a competitive point scoring. The motivation are driven by both the user’s possessive desire for certain product and the comparison with the other users’ scores. I hope to implement the most basic interactions to enforce the big satire.
Obviously, Tap On is supposed to be a critical design, but it does look bigger than itself.
This App is entirely written in Swift programming language.
